Spanish Parliament Considers Ban on Restraints in Youth Centers Following Moroccan Teen’s Death

The case of the young Moroccan Ilias Tahiri, who died under the same conditions as African-American George Floyd on July 1, 2019, in the Oria juvenile center in Spain, has reached the Spanish Parliament.
A delegation from the Justice for Ilias collective, composed of Mohamed Chaïb, former member of the Catalan and Spanish Parliament, also president of the "Ibn Battuta" foundation, was received at the Spanish Parliament to discuss the opportunity to introduce a bill banning the use of the mechanical restraint protocol in juvenile centers, said Mourad Elajouti, a lawyer at the Casablanca Bar and a member of the said collective, to Hespress.
"I think it’s a positive indicator that the Spanish state has understood that the use of this protocol, which goes back to the Middle Ages, and is contrary to human rights and must be abolished. We hope that this case will be the precursor to definitively lifting the application of this protocol in all juvenile centers," said the lawyer.
Another positive note in the Ilias Tahiri case: the judge of Almeria has sent a letter to the "Ginso" foundation, in which she announced that the mechanical restraint protocol is currently on hold in the "Ginso" center.
