Spanish Opposition Leader Vows to Reverse Sahara Policy if Elected

The President of the Popular Party (PP), Alberto Núñez Feijóo, met with the Moroccan Prime Minister, Aziz Akhannouch, in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, on the sidelines of the Congress of the European People’s Party. The Spanish leader assured the Moroccan official that he will reverse Pedro Sanchez’s decision on the Sahara if he succeeds him.
"The Sahara problem cannot be solved with a clandestine letter. Light must be shed on this issue. [...] The only thing secrecy can create is more problems, more tensions, more uncertainty and less responsibility towards the Sahrawi people, towards Morocco and towards the United Nations," Núñez Feijóo told El Mundo.
For the leader of the Popular Party (PP), the main opposition party, it is urgent to review Spain’s foreign policy. "Foreign policy is not a coincidence. A government cannot illegally introduce a citizen into its territory," he argued, referring to the entry of Brahim Ghali into Spain in April 2021.
This firm position of Núñez Feijóo, if he reaches the Moncloa, could have consequences for Spain’s future relations with Morocco. "What I can assure the Moroccan Prime Minister is that I will not deceive him, and I will not deceive my country either... Regarding UN resolutions, we can agree on many things," he stressed.
And he concluded: "I am convinced that the head of the Moroccan government has understood me. The important thing is that there are no deceptions between our two countries, that there is no disloyalty and that there are no clandestine letters." PP sources confided that at the end of the meeting, Aziz Akhannouch invited Feijóo to visit Morocco. An invitation that the latter plans to accept "before the end of the year".
