Spanish Opposition Calls for Military Deployment at Ceuta and Melilla Borders

The leader of the opposition and president of the Popular Party (PP), Pablo Casado, has asked the government of Pedro Sanchez to strengthen security at the borders of Ceuta and Melilla by deploying a permanent military contingent there.
The leader of the right-wing formation asked the Spanish Executive on Wednesday, before the lower house, to reinforce the defense forces at the borders of Ceuta and Melilia in order to protect the two autonomous cities from the assaults of Moroccan migrants.
The demand of the Popular Party (PP) joins that of the Vox party which has been calling, since the migration crisis in May, for a "reinforcement" of the borders of Ceuta and Melilia and for a reaffirmation of the "Spanish sovereignty" over these two enclaves.
Casado even went so far as to say that "immigration is one of the biggest problems in Spain". However, according to the latest data from the Center for Sociological Surveys (CIS), unemployment is at the top of Spaniards’ concerns. Similarly, the statistics from the Spanish Ministry of the Interior on migration flows contradict the statements of the PP leader. According to this department, 1,600 migrants were intercepted by the Spanish security forces between January 1 and October 31.
