Spanish Olive Oil Imports from Morocco Surge 57-Fold as Growers Blame Foreign Supply for Price Pressure
Spain imported more than 22,600 tonnes of Moroccan olive oil between January and July 2026, compared with fewer than 400 tonnes a year earlier. The increase comes as Spanish olive growers accuse industry buyers of favoring foreign supplies to put pressure on prices.
Spanish purchases from Morocco reached precisely 22,652 tonnes in the first seven months of the year, according to DataComex figures cited by El Debate. That is about 57 times the volume recorded over the same period in 2025.

The increase extends the surge already seen in the first half of the year. However, it comes from an exceptionally low level: only 397 tonnes of Moroccan oil had been purchased between January and July 2025.
Morocco remains behind Tunisia, which supplied around 70,100 tonnes to Spain over the same period in 2026. Together, the two countries account for nearly 92,800 tonnes, an increase of 142% year on year.
Olive growers train their sights on bottlers
Spanish producers are denouncing the use of oils from outside the European Union in the middle of the domestic marketing season. They accuse bottling companies of sourcing supplies abroad to put downward pressure on the prices paid to Spanish farms.
Their criticism is therefore aimed at industrial buyers’ choices. From all origins combined, Spain imported around 155,500 tonnes of olive oil between January and July, up 32% year on year.

These volumes do not reveal the final destination of Moroccan oil. Some may supply the Spanish market, while other shipments may be processed, bottled or re-exported. The increase in purchases therefore does not mean that all this oil ends up directly on Spanish store shelves.
