Spanish Man Dies from Rabies After Cat Bite in Morocco

A man in his forties died last Friday at the Cruces hospital in the municipality of Barakaldo, Spain, from complications of the rabies disease.
According to the Spanish media, the individual had developed the rabies syndrome, a virus that migrates to the brain through the peripheral nerves, following the bite of a cat in August, during his stay in Morocco.
The biological analyses carried out by the National Center for Microbiology on December 10 last confirmed the victim’s contamination by the dog rabies virus. The incubation period can take months before the first symptoms appear.
According to a statement from the Basque Government’s Ministry of Health, "the patient suffered from human rabies syndrome, the virus of which was transmitted by the bite of a cat".
The statement adds that all preventive measures have been taken by the emergency services of the ministry, specifying that the Basque region has not seen a case of human rabies for 30 years.
