Spanish Leaders to Visit Morocco Following Diplomatic Thaw over Western Sahara

After a year of diplomatic rift, Morocco and Spain have just normalized their relations. Several Spanish officials will make "soon" official visits to the kingdom.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the head of Spanish diplomacy José Manuel Albares will travel to Morocco very soon, and the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, will do so "soon".
The announcement of these visits comes after Morocco published a letter from Sánchez to King Mohammed VI, stating that Spain officially supports the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara.
According to the note, Sánchez stresses that he "recognizes the importance of the Sahara issue for Morocco" and notes "Morocco’s serious and credible efforts within the United Nations to find a mutually acceptable solution."
For its part, Spain "welcomes" the scheduling of the visit of its President of the Government to Morocco "with a view to drawing up the roadmap for this new stage, as well as the invitation made to the Minister of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation to travel to Rabat before the end of the month," the statement concludes.
