Spanish Government Faces Backlash Over Controversial Repatriation of Moroccan Minors

The return to Morocco of the minors who arrived in Ceuta in May has increased the tension within the Spanish government. The Podemos party accuses the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, of having engaged in these illegal collective returns of minors without involving his counterpart in charge of Social Rights.

Podemos is attacking the PSOE again. The political party believes that the process of returning the minors violates the law. But the Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, continues to certify that these repatriations are carried out in compliance with the texts in force, despite the decision of the Ceuta court to suspend the operation for 72 hours.

In doing so, Podemos has gone against the strategy defined by the new Vice President Yolanda Díaz, who favors resolving internal conflicts through dialogue and discretion.

For her part, the Minister of Social Rights and the 2030 Agenda, Ione Belarra, who was not associated with the operation, holds "solely and exclusively" her Interior counterpart responsible for all the actions carried out "by the Government Delegation in Ceuta and the State security forces and bodies" with a view to the collective return of these minors, EFE reports.

Before Podemos, the Ombudsman, human rights NGOs and international organizations such as the UN and UNICEF denounced the illegal nature of these collective returns of minors and called for the suspension of the operation.

Marlaska was already criticized by Podemos for his management of immigration. In November, Podemos Canarias had even called for the resignation of the Minister of the Interior for his "poor management" of the migration crisis and his opposition to the repatriation of migrants invading the archipelago.
