Spanish Foreign Minister Reaffirms Ceuta and Melilla’s Status as Spanish Territory

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares has reaffirmed his country’s position on the cities of Ceuta and Melilla, stating that "the two cities are Spanish, period."
Albares was reacting to statements by former Housing Minister Maria Antonia Trujillo, who recently declared at a colloquium at the University of Tetouan that the two enclaves are "an affront to Morocco’s territorial integrity." She added that "Morocco’s claim to Ceuta and Melilla is fully justified and inscribed in its national ideology."
These remarks by the former minister, which run counter to the position of the current government, did not go unnoticed, as local deputies subsequently decided to declare her "persona non grata" in the two cities.
For the Spanish Foreign Minister, the Spanishness of Ceuta and Melilla is indisputable.
