Spanish Fishing Fleet to Resume Operations in Moroccan Waters

From Monday, July 22, the Spanish fleet will be able to return to Moroccan waters, said Luis Planas, Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food.

The Spanish fleet is resuming fishing in Moroccan waters from Monday, July 22, 2019. According to Luis Planas, Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, this resumption follows the final approval of the fisheries agreement between the European Union and Morocco, after the ratification of this document, reports financialfood.es.

During the meeting of the first Joint Committee of this agreement, on Thursday, July 18, 2019, in Rabat, the stakeholders laid the foundations for the return of EU vessels. Likewise, the technical aspects to facilitate the issuance of the first licenses were discussed.

According to Luis Planas, the agreement is of paramount importance for Spain. This country alone represents more than half of the 138 possible licenses for the Spanish fishing sector, mainly for certain segments of the Andalusian, Canarian and Galician fleets. Moreover, a financial contribution of 50 million euros per year has been planned for access to the resource and sectoral support. Better, the sustainability of the fleet is a source of job creation and wealth in areas highly dependent on fishing, it is said.

This four-year agreement will also include improvements for the operation of the vessels.
