Spanish Firms Consider Relocating as Tangier Port Congestion Persists

Spanish groups are indirectly threatening to leave Morocco and transfer their production chains to Turkey and Egypt. The slowdown in exports at the port of Tangier Med is at the origin of this threat.
The slowdown in the transit of export trucks from Morocco to European countries and the United Kingdom continues at the port of Tangier Med, the largest in the Mediterranean basin, we learn. After Spanish companies, it is the turn of Moroccan fruit exporters to be confronted with the same problem: continuous slowdown and stifling congestion of the port of Tangier Med, which delays the delivery of Moroccan agricultural products to importers in European countries, reports Rue20.
According to Moroccan exporters, the problem is worrying. They deplore that government officials have not fully grasped the seriousness of the situation, which will result in significant losses, especially in the face of fierce competition in the fresh fruit export sector from Latin American and African countries.
Professionals expect the Ministries of Transport and Foreign Trade, as well as the Customs Directorate and the Tangier Med Port Authority, to find urgent solutions, including accelerating the exit of trucks and creating specific export routes that respect delivery deadlines and cargoes at risk of deterioration, such as fruits and vegetables, which remain blocked at the port for several days due to severe saturation.
