Spanish Coalition Party Sumar Aligns with Polisario Front on Western Sahara Issue

After failing to mention the conflict in the Sahara in the coalition government agreement signed at the end of October with the Spanish Socialist Party (PSOE), the Sumar party, led by Yolanda Diaz, wanted to make up for it by signing an informal agreement with the Polisario to defend the interests of the Sahrawi independence movement during the next legislature.
As part of this 11-point agreement, Sumar undertakes to work for a reversal of Spain’s change of position on the Sahara. To recall, Pedro Sanchez, in a letter addressed to King Mohammed VI in March 2022, expressed his support for the Moroccan autonomy plan. In the preamble to the agreement, the two parties state that Sánchez’s decision on the Sahara is "contrary to the law". Sumar will present a non-legislative proposal (PNL) to the Congress to request the cancellation of this decision.
The agreement also provides for the modification of the law on democratic memory from which the Sahrawis have been excluded. "We have conveyed these basic ideas to the Sumar leaders and they have accepted them without difficulty," Abdullah Arabi, the Polisario’s delegate in Spain, told El Confidencial. The agreement also talks about organizing "high-level visits to the Tindouf refugee camps" and in the "occupied territories" of the Sahara, as well as the unblocking of the seven million euros in aid "to the refugees" planned in this year’s budget.
This Saturday, interim Vice President Yolanda Díaz plans to participate for the first time in the demonstration in Madrid for "the right to self-determination of the Sahrawi people" and "decolonization".
