Spanish Cancer Patient in Moroccan Prison Awaits Urgent Transfer Home

The Spanish Ministry of Justice has initiated procedures for the "urgent" repatriation to Spain of a truck driver from Seville, suffering from cancer and serving a one-year sentence for drug trafficking in the local prison in Tangier.

Sentenced to 4 years in prison for drug trafficking, the Spanish carrier has been in the Tangier prison since July 4, 2021. But suffering from esophageal cancer, his family and him had requested his transfer to a prison in Spain to serve the rest of his sentence. "Do something, otherwise I’m going to die here," he confided to his sister during their last conversation.

Last week, the competent judge in Rabat forwarded a copy of the prisoner’s transfer request to an employee of the Spanish Consulate General in Tangier who visited him on September 13. "Once the Spanish government has given its transfer agreement, the Moroccan government will also have to do so, before the transfer can be carried out by the police services," indicate sources from the ministry to El Diario.

On July 19, 2021, the family had filed a request for pardon and transfer of the carrier before the Spanish Consulate General in Tangier, whose staff has always shown "exceptional commitment". Without success. Desperate, the family has just seized the King of Spain to ask him to intercede with the Moroccan authorities for the diligent transfer of the prisoner.

The carrier is married and father of three children, the last of whom was born in Osuna (Seville) only two months after his incarceration. Due to his fragile state of health, he has made several round trips between prison and hospital. He has already lost 47 kilos and his condition is not improving, complains his family who are asking for his transfer for better care in Spain. At the end of November 2021, 78 Spaniards were detained in Moroccan prisons, according to the Spanish authorities.
