Spanish Authorities Seize Undeclared Moroccan Fossils at Airport Customs

The Spanish Civil Guard seized, at the Lavacolla airport in Santiago, Spain, seven pieces of fossils from Morocco. Not having been previously declared by the carrier, these pieces were unidentifiable.
Agents of the Spanish Civil Guard made a surprising discovery during a routine baggage check. It was during a customs inspection of a passenger’s luggage, arriving from Morocco, that the agents found the fossils in his suitcase, but without the documents justifying their legality.
According to his statements, the passenger in question said he was the owner of the objects he had "bought all over Morocco", without holding "the invoices or documents attesting to the purchase of said fossils".
The Spanish Civil Guard seized the fossils and filed a complaint for alleged smuggling, justifying its act by the absence of any document of origin, customs declaration or from a competent Moroccan authority.
Furthermore, in a press release, the Spanish police said they had asked Morocco for an opinion on the fossils in question. For its part, the Spanish press noted that the owner "could be the subject of an investigation into a crime against historical heritage".
