Spanish Authorities Seize 18 Tons of Hashish in Major Atlantic Drug Bust

Spanish customs officers intercepted, on Tuesday, a tug loaded with nearly 18 tons of Moroccan hashish in the Atlantic waters north of the Canary Islands. Its destination would be a country on the west coast of Africa.
The operation, codenamed "Gigante", began in the early hours of Tuesday and ended in the afternoon with the interception of a tug named Cyklop 1 about 180 miles northwest of Gran Canaria, reports La Voz de Galicia. At the helm, a customs surveillance patrol boat based in the port of Las Palmas.
On board the intercepted vessel were five crew members, three of Moroccan nationality and two Bangladeshis. During the search, the customs services discovered a large number of hashish bales on board, which, pending the official count and weight, would reach 18,000 kilos (initially estimated at 15,000 kilos).
The drugs and all the persons arrested on the ship were handed over to the justice system. The case is under the coordination of the special anti-drug prosecutor’s office of the National Court.
