Spanish Airline to Launch Electric Aircraft Flights Between Spain and Morocco

The Spanish airline Hélity Copter Airlines is one of the few in the world to offer regular commercial helicopter flights in the Strait of Gibraltar. It plans to connect Moroccan cities with a new fleet of electric aircraft.
Surrounded by Morocco and the sea, Ceuta cannot have an airport like Melilla. This is what prompted Aena to build its first commercial heliport there to facilitate air arrivals and departures. The company later built the same infrastructure at the port of Algeciras, thus allowing the two sides of the strait to be connected in just seven minutes, according to La Vanguardia.
Hélity Copter Airlines has a fleet of four Leonardo AW139 helicopters with a capacity of 15 passengers. The company plans to launch new helicopter connections to Malaga and various Moroccan cities and to supply ships by air during their crossing of the strait.
In this context, Hélity announced in July its intention to acquire five fully electric, vertical take-off and landing aircraft from Lilium Air Mobility. This summer, Lilium is conducting all kinds of tests with its fifth-generation technology demonstrator at the Atlas flight test center in Villacarrillo, Jaén.
The acquisition of this type of aircraft will revolutionize the commercial aviation sector, assures Antonio Barranco, the head of Hélity. "We are entering a new aircraft profile: the Liliums, with a low noise and emission level. They have a wide and spacious cabin that will be very appreciated by our future passengers and will be very suitable for the growing premium and business flights in our region," he added.
