Spain Vows Firm Response to Algeria’s Suspension of Trade and Friendship Treaty

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, José Manuel Albares, assured that the Spanish government will give a "serene but firm" response to Algeria, which has decided to suspend its trade relations and the treaty of friendship with Spain, in reaction to the change of position on the Sahara.
Spain is analyzing the decision of Algeria, which has decided to suspend the treaty of friendship, good neighborliness and cooperation with Spain, and will give it a "serene, constructive, but also firm in the defense of the interests of Spain and Spanish companies," said Minister Albares. The head of Spanish diplomacy has already "regretted" this Algerian decision on Wednesday and affirmed that he does not fear retaliation in energy matters, as Algeria is a "reliable partner".
The government is analyzing the implications of this Algerian decision both in Spain and in the European Union, said the Spanish minister, reiterating the government’s willingness to maintain better relations with Algeria and its adherence to the entire content of the bilateral friendship treaty, which provides for the sovereign equality of States and non-interference in internal affairs.
After these statements, the Professional Association of Banks and Financial Institutions (ABEF) of Algeria ordered the freezing of banking transactions with Spain.
