Spain Urges US to Reconsider Stance on Western Sahara, Calls for Multilateral Approach

Spain is not in favor of the unilateral decision of the United States to recognize the Moroccanness of the Sahara. The Iberian neighbor proposes that the newly elected US president reconsider this decision for a return to "multilateralism".

The Sahara issue does not depend on the will or unilateral action of a country, no matter how large," declared the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya on the Onda Cera channel, alluding to the United States. For the head of Spanish diplomacy, Spain has already engaged in exchanges with Biden’s team. According to her, unilateralism has no place in international relations.

Arancha González also spoke about the relaunch of Moroccan-Israeli relations. She deplored the lack of international agreement to validate a "stable and accepted solution by all". "It will be up to him (Joe Biden, ed.) to assess the situation, to see how he wants to position himself and to work to bring about a just but also lasting solution that does not depend on a shift at one time or another, but which is anchored in the international community," the minister proposed.

Continuing her statement, the head of foreign diplomacy suggested the appointment of a special envoy who would have to "lead the efforts to find a solution by discussing with the immediate neighbors such as Morocco, Mauritania and Algeria, with members of the UN Security Council and with a group of countries, including Spain, which has close interests".

A week ago, when announcing the signing of the decree recognizing the Moroccan Sahara, the Spanish minister had expressed from Ramallah, where she was on an official visit, the "clear and constant position" of Spain on the Sahara issue according to "respect for the principles and resolutions of the UN".
