Spain to Transfer Sahara Airspace Control to Morocco in Landmark Aviation Deal

The Spanish government has acknowledged that it has engaged in negotiations with Morocco with a view to transferring the management of the airspace of the Sahara, which for decades has been managed from the Canary Islands, as established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
"Talks with Morocco in this area have begun and are limited to the management of airspace, coordination between the two parties in order to achieve greater safety in connections and technical cooperation," La Moncloa said in a written response to questions from Canarian Senator Fernando Clavijo, who wanted to know among other things whether this issue was addressed during the high-level meeting held in early February in Rabat.
For the Spanish Executive, this negotiation is "in line with point 7 of the joint declaration of April 7", which provides that the two countries "will enter into talks on the management of airspace". For decades, the airspace of the Sahara was managed from the Canary Islands, as established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO).
