Spain’s Tomato Imports Surge, with Morocco Supplying Nearly Half

Spain imported a total of 178.16 million kilos of tomatoes in 2021, nearly half (45.34%) of which came from Morocco, according to data from the Estacom statistical service.
Spanish tomato imports increased by 7.59% in 2021 compared to the previous year, from 165.58 to 178.16 million kilos. In detail, Morocco sold 80.79 million kilos to Spain, or 45.34% of the total, for a total value of 83.2 million euros and an average price of 1.03 euros per kilo, according to Hortoinfo.
Portugal follows Morocco with 57.18 million kilos imported by Spain for a total value of 31.75 million euros and an average price of 0.55 euros per kilo. The Netherlands was the third largest supplier of tomatoes to Spain with 20.51 million kilos for a total value of 23.88 million euros and an average price of 1.16 euros per kilo. Then come Belgium with 10.35 million kilos for 9.23 million euros (0.89 euros/kg), and France with 7.16 million kilos for 5.7 million euros (0.8 euros/kg).
By province, Madrid comes first with 40.2 million kilos for 18.65 million euros (0.46 euros/kg), followed by Barcelona with 26.85 million kilos for 24.45 million euros (0.46 euros/kg). Then come Almeria with 20.74 million kilos for 20.27 million euros (0.98 euros/kg), Murcia with 15.08 million kilos for 12.02 million euros (0.8 euros/kg) and Granada with 14.01 million kilos for 14.3 million euros (1.02 euros/kg).
