Spain Suspects Morocco in Pegasus Spyware Attack, Remains Silent Amid Diplomatic Concerns

The Spanish authorities suspect Morocco of being behind the hacking of the phones of Pedro Sanchez and Margarita Robles using the Pegasus software, but avoid publicly stating this due to ongoing agreements with the kingdom for the reopening of borders with Ceuta and Melilla among others.
Since the outbreak of the affair, Sanchez’s chief of staff, Oscar Lopez, has been tasked with contacting journalists to link the espionage to an international company, reports Ok Diario, specifying that the Spanish authorities are avoiding irritating Morocco due to the agreements reached by Mohammed VI and Pedro Sanchez during the latter’s visit to Rabat on April 7, including the reopening of the borders of Ceuta and Melilla and the creation of commercial customs.

These two important points for Spain, still suffering, could no longer be realized if the country openly accused Morocco of this espionage of the phones of Sanchez and Robles. Last year, Morocco was accused of having spied on the telephone of the French president, Emmanuel Macron, and that of several of his ministers. The Élysée has never confirmed these allegations. On Tuesday, the British newspaper The Guardian revealed that Rabat would have spied on some 10,000 phones, including more than 200 in Spain.

Government sources have confirmed that the former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, was also spied on during the crisis with Morocco. The Minister of the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, and the Minister of Justice, Pilar Llop, then President of the Senate, also gave their phones to be analyzed.
