Spain Sees Tourism Surge as Moroccan Travelers Double, Boosting Post-Pandemic Recovery

The number of travelers between Morocco and Spain more than doubled in 2022. This trend, which continues this year, makes the kingdom a potentially very promising market for the Iberian peninsula.
After a lean period due to the Covid-19 pandemic, tourism is experiencing an upturn in Spain. This is evidenced by the data from the Aeropuertos Españoles y Navegación Aérea (AENA) institution. In total, 53.6 million passengers transited through Spanish airports in January, February and March. Spain owes this upturn to countries like Morocco. The number of travelers who took a plane to or from the kingdom increased by 134% (more than double) to exceed 736,000 passengers in the first quarter. Morocco is now in twelfth position in the top 15 countries with the most passengers.
With nearly 1.5 million, Portugal ranks seventh in the ranking, with an 86% increase last year. With 3.3 million passengers, or nearly 60% more than last year, Italy was the fourth best market at the end of March. France occupies fifth place with 2.7 million passengers, an increase of 35% compared to the first quarter of 2022. With 600,000 passengers in just three months (48% more than in 2022), Poland completes the top 15 countries.
This upturn should continue, as airlines plan to increase their flight offerings for the summer season. Flight offerings to Morocco have increased by 60%, by nearly 50% to Poland and by 30% to Portugal.
