Spain Seeks Repatriation of Thousands of Unaccompanied Moroccan Minors

Spain wants to send hundreds of Moroccan children illegally present on its territory back to their country. Thus, Madrid is seizing all the judicial and consular Moroccan authorities to put an end to the phenomenon of migrant minors.

The Spanish administration, which has noted a decline in migrants from northern Morocco, in particular, over the last three months, is reacting to the growing number of unaccompanied Moroccan children on its territory.

According to UNICEF statistics, the number of Moroccan children illegally present on Spanish territory is around 9,000, or 68% of the total number of minors placed in reception centers in Spain.

According to Madrid, data from the migration services in Ceuta and Melilla indicate 296 requests addressed by the central government to the Moroccan consular authorities in 2019 and 107 in the first quarter of 2020, or some 403 repatriation requests addressed to the Moroccan authorities by their Spanish counterparts, from January 2019 to March 2020.

Morocco has not followed up on these requests, lament official sources in Madrid.
