Spain Reaffirms Unchanged Stance on Moroccan Sahara Issue

On the issue of the Moroccan Sahara, Spain’s position has not changed an iota. The country has reaffirmed that this "very clear" position is set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Presidency of the Government.
Spain remains constant in its position on the Moroccan Sahara. According to Arancha Gonzalez Laya, Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, the EU and Cooperation, "the position of the Spanish government on the Sahara is very clear and has not changed in the last few hours, days or weeks".
Speaking on the subject to the press at the end of the EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting, the Spanish Foreign Minister maintained the same discourse. In short, through its position, Spain expresses "full support" for the UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, so that he can "guarantee the maintenance of the ceasefire" in the Sahara and advance "a political negotiation that allows a political, negotiated, fair and lasting solution in accordance with the relevant UN Security Council resolutions," said Ms. Gonzalez Laya.
This position, the Spanish Minister stressed, is "obviously set by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs with the President of the Government, who are responsible for the foreign relations of our country." The head of Spanish diplomacy argued that "for Spain, what is important are the UN resolutions. The latest, in October of this year, clearly expresses the parameters of this negotiation."
In the perspective of promoting this dialogue, the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs indicated that she had conveyed her country’s position in "numerous contacts maintained in recent days with Morocco, Mauritania, Algeria and the UN Secretary-General, to promote this path of dialogue."
