Spain Raises Ceuta Border Fence to 10 Meters Amid Migration Pressures

The Spanish Ministry of the Interior announced on Saturday work to increase the height of the double fences at the Ceuta border with Morocco.
Faced with strong migratory pressure and regular assaults by sub-Saharan migrants, the Spanish government has also just announced the removal of barbed wire and its replacement with other less injurious material for migrants.
During a visit made yesterday to Ceuta, Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska declared: "The height of the fence will be increased by 30%, reaching ten meters, where the most entries have occurred." He added that "all the barbed wire will be replaced by an element (...) that will guarantee security without causing injury, all along the fence."
The work on this new "more humane" fence will begin in a month and a half, the minister promised, who should also make the same proposal to the city of Melilla, affected by assaults by illegal migrants.
