Spain Praises Morocco’s ’Extraordinary Cooperation’ in Stopping Migrant Surge at Melilla Border

Following the intervention of the Moroccan law enforcement forces to stop a massive assault of migrants on the city of Melilia, Spain has reacted, hailing "extraordinary cooperation" from Morocco.
In a speech in Brussels, the head of the Spanish government, Pedro Sanchez, congratulated the kingdom for its commitment to border security. "I would like to thank, on behalf of the Spanish government, Morocco for its extraordinary cooperation in the fight against illegal immigration," he said.
The head of the Spanish executive also expressed his "solidarity with the elements of the law enforcement agencies of the two countries, who were injured, during violent clashes with sub-Saharan migrants who tried to illegally cross the fence" between Nador and Melilia.
"At the same time, I would like to emphasize the importance of maintaining good relations with Morocco, which is a strategic ally for Spain... I remind you that Morocco is also facing strong migratory pressures, from other sub-Saharan countries, particularly those located in the "Sahel" region," Sanchez affirmed.
To recall, about 2,000 migrants attempted on Friday to cross the border separating the Melilla enclave from Morocco. The Moroccan law enforcement forces intervened to prevent this incursion. This was followed by great violence during which some 140 law enforcement officers were injured, including 5 seriously.
