Spain Pledges Support for Moroccan Expats’ Transit Amid Border Uncertainty

The Marhaba operation, dedicated to the reception of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs), has been canceled this year due to the epidemiological situation in the kingdom. However, Spain is committed to facilitating the transit of MREs who wish to return to their country individually.
As usual, the Iberian neighbor is determined to support Morocco. The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha Gonzalez Laya, announced on radio Onda Cero her country’s determination to accompany the MREs traveling on its territory if the kingdom opens its borders. These are Moroccans who wish to return to the country individually. It is "an exceptional summer. If there are citizens who want to make the transit, we will be able to manage the situation," she added.
Continuing her explanations, the Spanish Foreign Minister said that Spain and Morocco have been in "close contact" on this project. She also assures that she has exchanged several times with her Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita in order to coordinate and prepare for any eventuality.
Welcoming Morocco’s efforts to counter the pandemic, Arancha Gonzalez Laya praised Morocco’s decision to keep its borders closed. According to her, this is an act of responsibility due to the epidemiological situation.
