Spain Offers 268 Jobs to Moroccan Workers Amid Agricultural Labor Shortage

20,000 Moroccan seasonal workers have gone to work in the strawberry fields this year, under an agreement between Morocco and Spain. To make up for the labor shortage, the province of Segovia, in the center of the country, has offered 268 employment contracts.
According to El Norte de Castilla, relayed by Huffpost, the year 2019 saw a 35% increase in the number of recruits, who will have to meet the needs of companies, particularly outside the harvest periods, generally between February and May.
During their stay between June and August, then from September to December, in the cities of Fuente el Olmo de Fuentiduena, Chane, Navalmanzano, San Martin and Mudrian, the workers will be taken care of by the employers, both in terms of housing and travel.
In 2018, many Moroccan seasonal workers were victims of sexual harassment and exploitation by their employers. These facts caused an outcry in Spanish civil society and forced the authorities of the country to announce protection measures intended to put an end to it.
Initially denying this problem, the Moroccan authorities have finally recognized only a few cases, particularly in the Huelva region in the south of the country, where the majority of Moroccan workers are concentrated.
