Spain’s Municipal Elections: Over 460,000 Foreign Residents Eligible to Vote, Moroccans Excluded

On June 26, municipal elections will be held in Spain. And in addition to Spaniards, nationals of countries with which Spain has concluded a bilateral treaty recognizing the right to vote reciprocally are eligible to vote. This is not the case for Morocco.
According to the Publico.es website, countries "with a large number of nationals residing in Spain, such as Morocco, Argentina, Venezuela, Mexico or Brazil, will not be able to participate in the municipal elections, as the obligation to allow the reciprocal exercise of the right to vote is not met."
As for those who will be able to vote, according to the same source, there is a total of 466,696 foreigners from 47 different countries. The majority of foreigners who will be able to vote in the municipal elections are from Romania (113,800), followed by the British (97,585), Italians (57,553) and French (35,375). It should be noted that the number of Moroccans in Spain alone is one million (all ages combined).
In addition, it should be noted that this voting capacity granted to foreigners only concerns municipal elections (and European elections for European citizens). In general elections, only Spaniards are authorized to vote.
