Spain Warns Citizens to Avoid Moroccan-Algerian Border Amid Security Concerns

The Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation advises Spanish nationals present in Morocco to stay away from the Algerian borders.
Morocco is "generally a safe country for travelers," assures the Spanish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation. However, it points out that there are certain areas that it considers may be exposed to "terrorist attacks or violent attacks against Western interests and citizens on roads and in public places, such as markets, and especially in isolated rural areas," due to the "current international situation and instability in the neighboring Sahel region."
Despite these eventualities, these areas are not "high-risk places," the Spanish ministry still assures. Nevertheless, it is advisable to "avoid prohibited photography military zones and unmarked desert areas. In these cases, proximity to the Algerian border could be problematic, as it can be crossed without prior warning."
On August 29, the Algerian navy had killed two of the four young vacationers - three Franco-Moroccans and one Moroccan - who had strayed into Algerian maritime space near the Saïdia resort on their jet-skis.
