Spain Investigates Alleged Shooting of Migrants by Moroccan Forces

Spain has opened an investigation into allegations of shootings on migrants trying to reach the Canary Islands from Morocco. A charity claims that Moroccan soldiers opened fire on these migrants, causing several injuries and possibly one death. So far, no response has been obtained from the Moroccan authorities regarding these accusations, reports Reuters.
Despite the incident, the group of more than 40 migrants managed to leave Moroccan territory. They were rescued off Gran Canaria by Spanish forces. They said they had left from Boujdour, in southern Morocco. Upon arrival, no gunshot wounds were reported among them, but three individuals required medical care for other reasons.
But contradictory information is emerging about the migrants’ injuries. A Spanish police representative claims that one of the migrants had injuries compatible with gunfire. Furthermore, activist Helena Maleno reports that according to survivors who remained in Morocco, up to four shots were fired at the boat, killing a young Malian. In addition, two deaths were reportedly reported by the migrants before their departure from Morocco, adding to the confusion surrounding this case.
