Spain Installs Road Signs Targeting Moroccan Expatriate Drivers to Boost Safety

The Spanish Ministry of Transport and Sustainable Mobility, in collaboration with the Directorate General of Traffic (DGT), has authorized the installation of a series of information panels aimed at warning road users, particularly Moroccans residing abroad (MREs), of potential dangers. The objective is to improve road safety and promote more responsible driving.

Some 400 signs have already been installed on Spanish roads. Vertical or horizontal and in different colors, they carry various messages to users. It can be a warning of potential dangers, a reminder of a driving rule or a prohibition, or information on services and destinations.

Compliance with these signs is essential to prevent accidents and facilitate mobility, reports El Español, inviting users to be attentive to these signs and understand them. For example, as part of the Paso del Estrecho (OPE) or Marhaba operation in Morocco, which takes place every year between June 15 and September 15, a panel has been displayed. The image shows the word "ticket" printed in black letters on a white background, with a boat at sea carrying a car underneath.

This panel aims to improve the organization and safety of the Transit Operation which allows the return of Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) and especially in Europe to their country of origin during the summer via the Spanish ports. Other panels also warn of "dragon’s teeth", which are similar to "speed bumps" or "broken edge lines", urging the driver to slow down.

Other signs have also been introduced: the green and pink bands. They aim to allow pedestrians, cyclists and electric scooter users to circulate without endangering their safety and that of other road users. The DGT also plans to modernize road signs with the integration of luminous and digital panels.
