Spain Imposes 31% Vehicle Tax on Moroccan Expats at Algeciras Port

Upon returning to Europe, some Moroccans residing abroad (MREs) were subjected by the Spanish authorities to a 31% tax on the value of their vehicle before crossing the Port of Algeciras.
This misadventure is recounted in several videos that have just been published on YouTube. Indeed, the Spanish Civil Guard at the Port of Algeciras has imposed, without prior notice, new regulations on MREs leaving the port. According to the author of the video, the Spanish authorities asked him to pay 31% of the value of the car with a transit registration, specifying moreover that the motorists unable to pay this new tax are deprived of their vehicle. According to him, Spain now considers these cars as imported without declaration.
In this video posted on YouTube on August 20, 2019, he describes the misadventures of several of his compatriots: seizure of vehicles, blockage. Citing a case, he indicates that an MRE, owner of a 2018 Mercedes GLA, was forced to pay a tax of 20,000 euros. Overwhelmed by this situation, he ended up in the hospital after losing consciousness.
According to the Moroccan national living abroad, the ranks of MREs are growing at the Port of Algeciras. Some are forced to sleep in their vehicle. Others drag their babies under the scorching sun. The author of the video calls on Moroccans residing in France to file a complaint against the Spanish Civil Guard as soon as they arrive on French or other European soil. On the Moroccan customs side, although aware of the situation, they have taken no action to support the affected MREs.
