Spain Implements AI-Powered Facial Recognition at Morocco-Ceuta Border Crossing

Spain is pursuing its project to install a facial recognition system at the border with Morocco in Ceuta.
Cameras have been installed this week at the Tarajal border and will identify all passengers crossing the border on foot in both directions. The installation of this equipment aims to facilitate the police’s work of passenger control at the border, reports El Faro de Ceuta.
For almost two years now, Spain has been working to realize this smart border project in Ceuta. The objective is to speed up checks and streamline traffic. The new automated control system saves time and avoids monstrous traffic jams at the border crossing.
How will facial recognition control be carried out? The traveler will position himself in front of a camera for the analysis of his facial data which will be compared with those in the database. If the information does not match, the traveler will not be allowed to enter Ceuta.
This intelligent system will prevent fraud and identity theft. It will automatically generate a passenger database, which will facilitate the transit of cross-border workers who cross the border every day from Morocco to go to work in Ceuta.
