Spain’s Foreign Minister Sparks Controversy with African Union Map Tweet

The Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maria Gonzalez Laya, recently published on her Twitter account a message removing the flag of the "Sahrawi Republic" from the political map of the African Union. This message provoked the reaction of the Sahrawi delegate in Spain, Abdulah Arabi.
"From the Sahrawi delegation to Spain, I greet you and convey our greatest unease in the face of the recent publication of the Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs on her official Twitter account, on the occasion of Africa Day [May 25]," writes the Sahrawi diplomat to the Director General of the Department of North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Spanish Cooperation, Eva Martlinez Sanchez.
"In this publication, a map of the African continent that has been modified to make the flag of the SADR disappear appears next to the congratulatory note," he specifies.
Abdulah Arabi will recall "that the SADR is a founding member and a full member of the African Union" and that "this incident constitutes a provocation both towards the African continent and the SADR. "We therefore expect a rectification in this regard," he continues.
And he concludes: "Bilateral and good neighborly relations must not alter the international order of another continent which, as a member of the European Union, is composed of 55 countries with their respective flags."
