Spain to Face EU Inquiry on Pegasus Spyware Attack, Morocco’s Role in Question

The Spanish government will be working in two weeks before the European Parliament’s inquiry commission that is trying to uncover the perpetrator of the hacking of President Pedro Sanchez’s mobile phone using Pegasus. Morocco was accused of being behind this attack.
The Spanish Executive will be before this commission on November 29 to support whether or not Morocco is responsible for the espionage of the mobile phones of Sanchez and the Ministers of Defense, Margarita Robles, and the Interior, Fernando Grande-Marlaska, which occurred in May-June 2021, in the midst of a diplomatic crisis between Morocco and Spain.
The European Union has opened an investigation into various cases of espionage using the Israeli software Pegasus. Last week, the chair of the inquiry commission, Dutch MEP Sophie in’t Veld, announced the availability of her interim report. This document, which Ok Diario has had access to, reports that the investigation into the espionage of the phones of Sanchez, Robles and Marlaska has not led to any conclusion.
The appearance of government representatives before this commission will perhaps allow new elements to be found and shed light on this case in order to determine whether Morocco is "potentially responsible" for this cyber attack. The report mentions this possibility, but does not confirm it, due to lack of data.
"The European Parliament has not been able to provide proof of Morocco’s responsibility in the espionage of the phones of the President of the Spanish government and some of his ministers. I would be delighted to have information from the Spanish government," said the chair of the commission.
