Spain Extends Residence Permits for Immigrants by 6 Months Amid COVID-19 Crisis

The Spanish government decided last Wednesday to extend the stay of foreigners whose permit has expired during the state of health emergency by six months.
According to Spanish media, the decision, published in the official gazette, concerns residence, work and study declarations, and aims to guarantee the legal protection of immigrants whose documents cannot be updated due to the closure of administrations.
Effective May 20, the new provision, which also authorizes group declarations, will allow foreigners to benefit from an additional period to regularize their situation.
To recall, the Spanish government had begun the gradual deconfinement operation, after a strict confinement that had lasted two months. Until the end of June, the resumption of commercial activities is taking place in compliance with barrier gestures and social distancing measures.
