Spain expels an agent from its intelligence services out of fear of recruitment by Morocco

The expulsion took place in a brutal manner at the headquarters of the National Intelligence Center (CNI). After four years of service, this contract agent was searched by internal security, taken to human resources, and then escorted out without being able to retrieve his belongings. This radical decision follows a year-long internal investigation that revealed security flaws deemed critical by the center’s management.

The intelligence service justifies this dismissal by a "serious security risk", estimating that the employee’s loyalty to Spain is, at best, "uncertain". According to the internal reports cited by El Confidencial Digital, his personal discontent and family ties in Morocco could be "detected and used by Moroccan intelligence services". His undisclosed trips abroad were the final nail in the coffin for his superiors.

The investigation also points to behavior deemed incompatible with the requirements of the field. The agent is accused of feeling neither "appreciation nor respect for the institution" and of having made contemptuous remarks towards his colleagues and Spain. For his part, the person concerned denounces moral harassment from his superior and claims that his annual evaluations were positive until then.

Sued by the former agent for discrimination, the Spanish National Court rejected his appeal at the end of March 2026. The judges stressed that the CNI requires "extreme trust" throughout the employment relationship. The courts consider that the expulsion is motivated by the protection of national security and not by the employee’s origin, thus confirming the loss of trust of the institution.
