Spain Denies Citizenship to Suspected Moroccan Intelligence Agent

The highest Spanish court has recently confirmed the refusal to grant Spanish nationality to a Moroccan citizen, suspected of spying for Morocco since 1999.
This decision is based on a report from the National Intelligence Center (CNI) which points to the individual’s long-standing collaboration with Moroccan intelligence services. The judgment, handed down on October 9, states that the applicant, while not denying the facts, admits to having worked with these services for nearly 25 years.
This case is not isolated, since since 2013, the Spanish justice system has refused nationality to seven Moroccans in similar circumstances. These refusals are justified by reasons of "public order or national interest", following alerts from the CNI regarding the involvement of these individuals in espionage activities for Morocco.
The accused has refuted the accusations, arguing a case of mistaken identity on the part of the CNI. He offered to provide documents from the Moroccan judicial and police authorities attesting to the absence of a criminal record. However, the Spanish justice system has maintained its position, relying on the detailed information provided by the CNI on the individual’s suspicious activities.
For the Spanish press, this judgment reveals a worrying reality: Morocco would have deployed agents in Spain, working for Rabat’s intelligence without interruption since 24 years.
