Spain Defends Humanitarian Aid to Polisario Leader at UN Amid Passport Controversy

The case of Brahim Ghali, the Polisario leader, admitted to the San Pedro de Logroño hospital under a false identity on April 18 after contracting Covid-19, has landed at the UN. Pedro Sánchez, President of the Spanish government, defended the Spanish administration during his speech on Thursday at the United Nations headquarters in New York.
By accepting to host the head of the separatist movement on Spanish territory, the "government has reacted to a humanitarian crisis", explained Pedro Sánchez. "Spain has saved a person who was about to die. [...] This is the only argument with which the government has justified Ghali’s entry into Spanish territory," he added.
He also called for "waiting for the results of the investigation into the falsification of his passport". It is necessary "to continue the investigations concerning the false diplomatic passport (with which Ghali entered Spain, editor’s note) so that the overall picture is clear," continued the Spanish head of government.
Since Tuesday, Arancha Gonzalez Laya, former Spanish Minister of Foreign Affairs, is the subject of an investigation into the conditions of the reception of the Polisario leader. In a press release, the regional court of Aragon (northeast) states that an investigating judge of the court of Saragossa (northeast) "has decided to summon the former Minister of Foreign Affairs Arancha Gonzalez Laya to be heard as part of the judicial investigation into the Ghali affair". His date of appearance has not yet been specified.
