Spain's Civil Guard Aims to Boost Anti-Crime Cooperation with Morocco and EU Agencies

The Director of the Civil Guard, Leonardo Marcos, reaffirmed on Wednesday from Ceuta the willingness of the armed institute to "strengthen" the "magnificent cooperation" with the Moroccan security forces in the field of prevention and fight against terrorism, organized crime and drug and human trafficking.

In addition to strengthening its cooperation with "the Royal Gendarmerie, the Moroccan Police and Navy", the Civil Guard intends to "intensify" cooperation with Europol, Frontex, and the Nature Protection Service (Seprona), Marcos said, specifying that the armed institute is resolutely engaged in a "process of innovation and digital transformation".

"Another of our priorities is to deepen prevention, improve protection measures and work on awareness-raising against gender-based violence, a scourge that threatens freedom and security," added the Director General of the Civil Guard, calling for the recruitment of more female personnel. "The role of women is fundamental in the Civil Guard. We need their spirit and talent. In the recent promotions, their number has exceeded 30%, an important rate, but still far from the goal we have of being the reflection of Spanish society."

The official, who took office only last June, did not fail to praise the "professionalism", "commitment to society" and "political neutrality" of the some 80,000 civil guards (men and women), including 608 deployed in Ceuta. The government will continue to "improve the material resources" of the armed institute and strengthen the capacities of the civil guards, he assured.
