Spain Calls for UN-Backed Political Solution to Western Sahara Conflict

During the 75th UN General Assembly, the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sanchez, reaffirmed his country’s call for a political solution based on compromise to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
"We must find a just, lasting and mutually acceptable political solution to the Sahara conflict, as stipulated by the Security Council resolutions and within the framework of the provisions respecting the purposes and principles contained in the United Nations Charter," said Mr. Sanchez in a pre-recorded video address. In 2019, Mr. Sanchez had expressed this position before the same Assembly, reports the MAP.
For his part, the President of Burkina Faso, Mr. Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, indicated that "the notable results that have been achieved following the holding of the two Geneva round tables, between Algeria, Morocco, Mauritania and the Polisario, deserve to be consolidated". This will make it possible to reach a consensual political solution to the Moroccan Sahara issue.
"And to this end, Burkina Faso wishes the appointment of a new special envoy (of the UN) to continue the work of his predecessor," Hörst Kohler, who had resigned last year for health reasons, said the Burkinabe President.
