Spain Bolsters Air Defenses in Ceuta: Tensions with Morocco Escalate
As part of the DACE exercise, the anti-aircraft artillery group of the 30th Mixed Artillery Regiment (RAMIX 30), based in Ceuta, has deployed its units equipped with Oerlikon 35/90 twin-barreled cannons and Mistral missile systems. The objective is to prepare for any possible attack from Morocco, which continues to claim Ceuta and Melilla, as well as the Spanish islands and rocks.
This training and exercise aims to maintain and improve the operational readiness level of RAMIX 30 and to strengthen its ability to respond to air threats in very demanding scenarios. During these maneuvers taking place in different locations around Ceuta, the participating units train in deployment, positioning, target acquisition and tracking, as well as coordination of fire, as reported by El Debate.
RAMIX 30 is the main air defense unit of Ceuta and is part of the Ceuta General Command (COMGECEU). Its mission is to provide air defense coverage of the area and to participate in air defense missions on national territory or in international operations when required by the Anti-Aircraft Artillery Command (MAAA). As part of the DACE exercise, the Oerlikon 35/90 twin-barreled cannons and the short-range Mistral missiles have been deployed. While the former can fire over 1,000 rounds per minute and neutralize low and medium altitude aircraft, the latter offer a rapid and precise response capability against aircraft, helicopters, and drone threats.
During this exercise, the procedures for detecting, identifying and neutralizing threats were tested, thus strengthening the interoperability between the cannon and missile sections. This activity also allows for the evaluation of the integration of weapon systems with command and control centers, an essential aspect to ensure a rapid and effective response to any potential air intrusions. The training also includes the simulation of scenarios for the defense of sensitive points, convoys and logistics areas, under different threat levels. With this type of operation, the Spanish Army strengthens its ability to protect its airspace and contributes to national defense.
Morocco continues to claim Ceuta and Melilla, which it considers as "territories awaiting decolonization", as well as the Chafarinas Islands and the rocks of Velez de la Gomera and Al Hoceima. Over the past decade, the kingdom has been working to modernize its army with the acquisition of air defense systems and combat drones from Turkey, Israel and the United States. This exercise shows that Spain maintains its defense on alert in the most sensitive areas of its territory.
