Spain Becomes Net Gas Exporter to France Amid Energy Crisis

Enagás CEO Arturo Gonzalo Aizpiri stated on Tuesday that Spain exports more gas to France through the interconnections at Irún (Guipúzcoa) and Larrau (Navarre) than it imports from Algeria via the Medgaz.
Gonzalo Aizpiri, participating in a roundtable during the annual meeting of the gas employers’ association Sedigas, indicated that since the Russian-Ukrainian crisis, these interconnections with France have been operating in the south-north direction at "full capacity", which is 7 billion cubic meters, adding that the refueling of ships with liquefied natural gas (LNG) has increased by 289%.
For his part, the director of energy management and networks at Naturgy, Pedro Larrea, stressed that the electricity system, with the increase in renewable energy production, will need more thermal production with gas by 2030 and that it is urgent to invest massively in the sector to consolidate the gains.
According to him, Spain, a pioneer in the development of renewable energies, has not made much progress in the production of renewable gas, while 50% of the country’s current gas consumption not dedicated to electricity production could come from biomethane. The challenge is to reduce Europe’s dependence on Russian gas by two-thirds by next year, he stressed.
