Spain Backs Morocco’s Sahara Plan, Strives to Maintain Algeria Ties Amid Tensions

The Minister of Territorial Policy and government spokesperson, Isabel Rodriguez, assured that the decision to support the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara will not affect its "solid" relationship with Algeria, a "strategic, reliable and friendly partner".
Although the Algerian government has recalled its ambassador to Madrid for consultations on Saturday, after the announcement of Spain’s decision to support Morocco’s autonomy plan for the Sahara, Minister Isabel Rodriguez believes that the relationship with Algeria is "fundamental" in the context of the Ukrainian crisis. The minister assured that the government is working to "cushion" the effects of this crisis.

"The opening of this new stage in relations between Spain and Morocco guarantees the necessary stability, as it implies mutual respect, the absence of unilateral actions and the maintenance of fluid and frank communication to continue strengthening migration cooperation," added Rodriguez in an interview published Sunday in the newspaper La Razón.
Minister Isabel Rodriguez took the opportunity to urge the Popular Party (PP), the main opposition party, to show "patriotism" and support the government’s national plan in response to the war.
