Spain's Arms Sales to Morocco Surge 13-Fold in 2024

Spain has multiplied its arms sales to Morocco by 13 in 2024, representing an increase of 1,264.77% compared to 2023, according to data from the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Commerce. Meanwhile, the Iberian peninsula refuses to increase its military budget, as recommended by NATO.

In 2024, Spain sold 21 million euros worth of weapons to Morocco, compared to only 1.5 million in 2023. The country notably sold 12.8 million euros worth of bombs, grenades and torpedoes to the kingdom, compared to 1 million in 2023, an increase of 1,096.33% in one year. Spanish exports of parts and accessories of weapons to Morocco have also seen a record increase, going from 10,015 euros in 2023 to 8 million euros in 2024, an increase of 79,739.22%.

Spain also sold 205,564 euros worth of spring-loaded rifles, carbines and pistols to Morocco, 10% more than in 2023, reports Ok Diario. On the other hand, Spain only bought 1,277 euros worth of weapons from Morocco in 2024. In detail, the Iberian peninsula acquired spring-loaded rifles, carbines and pistols for 660 euros, as well as swords, swords and bayonets for 617 euros.

In total, Spain sold more weapons than it bought in 2024: its exports to Morocco amount to 858.4 million euros and its imports to 290.76 million euros. In addition, the government of Pedro Sánchez approved in July the purchase of "war weapons" from China, revealing an increased interest of Spain in weapons manufactured in countries like Morocco or China.

According to data from the Spanish Ministry of Economy, arms imports from the United States fell by 26% in 2024 compared to the previous year.
