Spain Approves €26 Million Equipment Deal to Aid Morocco’s Fight Against Illegal Immigration

At a meeting on Friday, July 5, 2019, the Spanish Council of Ministers approved the agreement signed with Morocco, with a view to providing it with equipment to fight illegal immigration from its territory.
In total, some 384 vehicles will be granted to Morocco for an estimated amount of 26 million euros, or just over 270 million dirhams. This aid comes in application of the comprehensive agreement signed with the European Union.
It consists of 7 lots of vehicles including 4x4s, ambulances, several trucks including tankers and refrigerated trucks (see details at the end of the article).
This aid to Morocco is not without counterpart since the Moroccan authorities will have to, thanks to this equipment, strengthen the surveillance of land borders, at the level of Ceuta and Melilla, and prevent any assault of migrants. In addition to this surveillance, it will be a question of rescuing them at sea and training Moroccan executives.
This aid is the first of a long series. The European Union plans to release 44 million euros and another 40 million, all to better fight illegal immigration from Morocco.
Details of the equipment:
• 230 4x4 vehicles, for a price of 13.8 million euros. These vehicles are equipped for extreme conditions.
• 100 4x4 pick-up vehicles, for 5.5 million euros.
• 10 4x4 vehicles equipped as ambulances, for 520,000 euros.
• 10 water tanker trucks, for 1.65 million euros
• 8 fuel tanker trucks, for 1.32 million euros
• 10 other 4x4s, for 2.61 million euros
• 8 refrigerated trucks, for 600,000 euros.
