Spain Approves €30 Million Aid to Morocco for Border Control Amid Far-Right Opposition

The far-right party Vox is asking the Spanish government not to transfer the 30 million euros in aid, approved by the Council of Ministers in the wake of the migration crisis in Ceuta, and intended to strengthen the capacities of the Moroccan police forces in the fight against illegal immigration.
Vox disapproves of the attitude of Pedro Sanchez’s government, which has authorized the granting of these funds to the Moroccan police, which it accuses of complicity in the invasion of migrants in Ceuta on May 17 and 18. In a series of questions to the government, the far-right party asked to know the total amount of Spanish aid for police cooperation with Morocco.

In response, the Spanish Executive confirmed the amount of 30 million euros approved by the Council of Ministers, specifying, however, that "no disbursement has yet been made." The government emphasized the "preventive" nature of cooperation with Morocco and other countries of origin and transit of migrants. "The aid aims to improve the capacities of the police forces of these countries in the fight against illegal immigration and human trafficking," the Spanish government argues.
Furthermore, the government avoided answering Vox’s question about whether diplomatic actions have been taken with the US authorities regarding the crisis with Morocco. The Executive simply indicated that it maintains a constant dialogue with the US authorities.
