Spain and Morocco Strengthen Cooperation on Migration, Drug Trafficking, and Terrorism

The meeting that took place between the two Spanish and Moroccan ministers on Wednesday, September 4, focused exclusively on strengthening bilateral cooperation in the fight against illegal migration, drug trafficking and terrorism, according to a press conference held by the two personalities.

Relations between the two countries are in good shape, according to the Moroccan Minister of the Interior, who reviewed the exchanges he had with his Spanish counterpart. According to Abdelouafi Laftit, the decisions affecting the two neighboring countries "are taken in close collaboration".

Several subjects of common interest, in particular the migration issue, the fight against drug trafficking and terrorism, were at the heart of the exchanges between Laftit and Grande-Marlaska, reports the MAP.

As for the Spanish Minister, the "direct and sincere" cooperation between the two kingdoms in the fight against illegal migration, terrorism and organized crime is excellent. Marlaska, however, described the record of Moroccan-Spanish cooperation in all these areas as "positive".

Laftit’s guest did not fail to highlight the security efforts of the two countries, noting that, in a serious manner and in a spirit of coordination and cooperation, the two countries have worked to fight against human trafficking networks, emphasizing the decrease in the number of illegal migrants arriving at the Spanish maritime borders (-45%).

During this press conference, the Spanish Minister congratulated the Kingdom for the regularization process undertaken in Morocco for the benefit of more than 50,000 illegal migrants from sub-Saharan African countries, stressing that the Kingdom of Morocco is also under great migration pressure.
