Spain and Morocco to Resume Talks on Territorial Waters, Immigration

The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, announced on Tuesday that the Spanish-Moroccan commission in charge of studying the delimitation of territorial waters will resume its work next week, assuring that the Canarian Executive will participate in these sessions which will also focus on immigration and infrastructure.
The commission will be composed of several sub-commissions on immigration, infrastructure and on the delimitation of Canarian and Moroccan waters, said the Canarian president, adding that this framework for exchanges between Spain and Morocco is "necessary to put the problems on the table and avoid new conflicts, especially regarding the delimitation of territorial waters".

For Torres, this Spanish-Moroccan commission is an opportunity to agree on a delimitation of territorial waters that will have "indisputable" legal value under international law. The Canarian president also reiterated his opposition to the oil exploration announced by Morocco near the archipelago, insisting that the kingdom should first ensure its sovereignty over the waters in which this research will be carried out.
Morocco must be more committed to the production of clean energy, rather than investing in oil, Torres stressed, convinced that renewable energies are "the present and the future".
