Spain and Morocco Negotiate Improved Sahara Airspace Management, No Transfer Planned

The President of the Canary Islands, Ángel Víctor Torres, assured that the Spanish government does not intend to cede the airspace of the Sahara, hitherto controlled from the Canary Islands, to Morocco, specifying that the ongoing negotiations between the authorities of the two countries aim to improve the control of this airspace.

"In no case will there be a transfer of the airspace of the Sahara to Morocco. What the two governments are discussing is to improve the management of this airspace," Torres said, recalling that these negotiations are in line with point 7 of the joint declaration of last April between Spain and Morocco.

The Canarian president said he had exchanged with the Minister of Foreign Affairs who assured him that the talks with Morocco do not concern any transfer. Torres also stressed the importance of maintaining a fluid relationship with Morocco based on "transparency", without making "unilateral decisions", "without distorting things and without triggering an alarm between the Spanish and Moroccan governments".
